Northaven Resort 1st
Annual Buccaneer Classic The Northaven Buccaneer Classic is a cardboard boat building competition and race that will take place on Saturday August 22, 2009 The guidelines and rules for the race are as follow: The race is intended to be a fun event combining Northaven
members and guests into teams that will build cardboard boats from material
supplied and judged by our Northaven Members sponsors. (Jay, Laurie, Todd and
Greg Northaven Pier #5) The cardboard
boats will be constructed beginning Friday night from
All boats must pass a seaworthy test by participating in the Pirate’s Cup race at Grand
Prize The
Pirates Cup All boats, including those entered in the appearance
competition, must be in the water, with the team captain on board, and at the starting line at HINT: If all boats that are
racing “sink” or are unable to complete a lap around the course , the last boat
that is floating any place on the course – past the start line -will be declared
the winner ( 30 second late entry penalties
apply to this circumstance) Boat Fabrication Rules The following rules will apply to all teams: All materials for the basic hull construction will be supplied by the event sponsors. No material can be added or used that will add or effect the integrity of the basic hull (below or near the waterline/design)- interior or exterior- or the buoyancy of the craft. The intent of this contest is to have all teams equal with basic floatation materials. There is enough material for teams that sign up early. All teams must sign up with John via email two weeks prior to the event. Email John at NorthavenNewsEd@aol.com MATERIAL SUPPLIED WILL BE: 1) 2 sheets of triple wall cardboard( uncoated) approximately 1 full sheet@98” x 110” and 2 ½ sheets. 2) 1 roll of duct tape 3) 1 qt of latex paint/water seal 4) 1 box cutter 5) 1- plastic screen roller 6) 1 piece of 1 1/2” x ½” x 10’ poplar (wood) strip (to be used for straight edge and paddle construction only) Suggested tools that will not be supplied: 1) Steel straight edge 2) Paint brushes or rollers w/tray 3) Bribes for the Judges (suggestions may include, but are not limited to: scantily clad women, oil soaked muscular men, sex-slaves captured from another “band” camp, bottles of spiced rum (no cheap stuff!!), pieces at 8 or 9 might even be better!) The hull, frame, supports and any deck must be made using the cardboard supplied by the sponsors. Cardboard can be bent, formed into beams, rolled, layered, glued, taped and painted. No surfboard style (glued layers together flat with no sides) construction is allowed. You may use “raft” designs. All craft must have sides around the complete hull. No Styrofoam or additional materials used for floatation are allowed. No inflatable devices or toys may be attached to the hull that would be used for floatation – inside or outside. You may not use tape to coat the hull – only the seams!. The hull can only have latex paint added. You may not use epoxy or oil based paints anywhere on the boat.( We need to keep the pond free of chemicals!) You may use your own colors /additional latex paint above the waterline to decorate. The only “power” allowed is 1 paddle constructed using the pine stick, cardboard, tape or adhesive provided. Sails may be added- if you are nuts enough to think they might work. Cosmetic material should be added to inspire the judges and the crowd. Cosmetic material must be above the waterline – which will be determined when the captain is onboard. Construction Hints and
Suggestions: 1) Make a paper template as a model before you start cutting up your limited supply of cardboard. 2) Duct tape will not stick to painted cardboard. 3) Paint your boat or hull materials as soon as possible, wet latex painted hulls will sink easier than unpainted cardboard! 4) Try and fold and tape exterior edges rather than cut and tape. Cardboard “wicks” water quickly from through exposed edges. 5) Triple wall cardboard is very heavy duty/rigid and VERY buoyant if you keep it dry. 6) Wider boats float easier, but are harder to paddle. 7) Narrow boats sit lower in the water and are harder to keep floating. Water is “heavy” and the deeper your boat is sitting in the water – the more pressure is exerted against the hull below water. 8) Selecting or electing a “lighter” captain will decrease the water displaced by your boat when it is launched. You MAY pre-construct or design any cosmetic additions to your boat as long as they are not part of the hull or floatation system. Race Rules 1) ALL
BOAT CAPTAINS MUST WEAR A LIFE JACKET (NOT SUPPLIED) TO BE ALLOWED ON THE
WATER! Once on-board their boats and on the water, Captains may not wear any
clothing other than a bathing suit and/or a hat (optional). THIS IS A SWIMMER SAFETY ISSUE – NO
EXCEPTIONS! 2) Weather rules. If there is any thunder or lightning during the contest – The contest is immediately suspended with no winners – other than “show winners” that made to float-off- declared. ALL CAPTAINS AND CREW MEMBERS ARE RESPONSIBLE TO CLEAN UP THE AREA AROUND THE POND IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE RACE. There will be wet cardboard that needs to be cleaned up from around the pond. Awards and trophies will be awarded at the Saturday night dance. Dance theme: “Talk-Like-A-Pirate!” 50/50 tickets will be
available throughout the day. The sponsors reserve the right to
change any rules at anytime to maintain a fair contest and to minimize
confusion. The sponsors are not entering
a boat the 1st year of the competition.
